having Emma Watton
who is on the Board of the Humanitarian Group
as the Guest
Speaker on Monday 26th March.
Emma is a consummate professional who has
extensive experience
in the communication fields and has worked closely
with
organisations of all sizes and types.
Emma now works for the Humanitarian
Group,
using her great skills in promoting this worthwhile organisation.
It is
a West Australian not-for-profit organisation focused
on empowering vulnerable
people by providing professional
and accessible migration assistance, legal
advice and education
Rotary Club of Ascot
Members of Ascot
Rotary have once again come to the
party
to support women and children escaping domestic and family violence.
Their donation to Starick of $7 900 will support women and children
who are
part of our Safe at Home program in the Ascot Rotary catchment areas
to improve
the security of their homes.
Fleeing domestic violence often results in homelessness for women and children.
The Safe at Home program seeks to address this by supporting
women and children
to stay safely in their own homes.

It was great to see our International Director Peter Durrant
back in Perth for the meeting this week
and sporting a new look slim line look.
Following Water and Sanitation Month,
Peter
delivered a timely update
on the RC Karrinyup Zambia Water Project
Phase 1 of the project,
which provides clean drinking water for
a school
of 80 vulnerable children in Nbola, Zambia,
has been completed.
As we
move into Phase 2, school director Joyce
has provided a landmark detailed
progress report
and Peter is working to tighten the coalition
with the Zambian
Rotary clubs.
Meanwhile, our club member Nchima
has just returned from a visit
to Zambia
and we look forward to receiving his report on the status
onsite.
Peter Martin introduced Samantha
Jenkinson,
an advocate for the rights of people with disabilities since
the early 1990’s,
and throughout her professional life as a Social
Worker. Samantha,
who was disabled following a motor vehicle accident
,
at the age of twenty, is the Executive Director of "People with
Disabilities WA".
She stated that 1 in 5 people or 4.3 million in
Australia are disabled.
Our club has supported the Multiple Sclerosis Society of WA
over
many years
This week, Community Service Committee member
Colin made our annual
donation to Sue from MS WA.
Sue says she almost feels like a member
of the RC
Karrinyup now,
as she has been so often.
Sue thanked the club for our ongoing
support.
She gave us an update on latest developments
and support for clients,
as the society expands its footprint with a move
from Wangara to Joondalup.
She
told us our donation would be spent
on a special hoist for the Joondalup
facility.
Club members will remember the efforts Trish
Lynch
went to in promoting our club with the Facebook photo album
for Rotary's
birthday on 23 March.
However, they may not be aware that she was recognised
by Rotarians on Social Networks Fellowship for her efforts.
This week their Chair Rotarian Kate McKenzie
from E-WA Rotary met up with Trish to
present her with a pin,
which she won for her participation
in the photo competition.
At our meeting this week,
Trish
presented the pin to Ona.

Geoff Hick did a great job in
introducing guest speaker and member Steve Wilton.

At the club's meeting on 04 April,
members and numerous guests
were treated to an expose of the intricacies
of
home stay health care options for retirees
by Samantha Spiro of Mercy Care.
Sam
gave those present a very fluent account of the subject
and the presentation
was enjoyed by all.

Emma Piper-Burket
did this project to see if the life of a woman
could be illustrated by clips of
women
from films directed by women.
She found movies spanning 122 years
from
every corner of the world,
and set to work.
This is an exercise that could be re-examined daily
, each time with
different results,
and this makes me incredibly optimistic.
As a female
filmmaker it is easy to get discouraged
in the face of all the statistics,
but
putting this together, and seeing in condensed form
the work of over a century
women
using film as a medium for expression,
