Autism Awareness Day 2018

Rotary Club of Scarborough
at the club meeting

Jim Joseph  introduced the guest speakers
for the day from the Telethon Institute
Dr Keely Bebbington and Dr Kiah Evans.
Kiele and Kyar then gave an overview
of how the Autism portal works
and the information that can be obtained
 from its data source.

   The information included;

   Monitoring service delivery
   Categorise who uses the services
The age and history of people in the registry
   Monitoring assessment standards
   Extacting data to assist families
and link with other registries in the world

This is a project that the Rotary Club of Scarborough
has directly funded and it was great
to see the clubs funds being put to such a good use
that can assist families and provide
ongoing valuable information
for research into the future.

Keely and Kiah then took many questions
 from the audience.
Jim Joseph then thanked Keely & Kiah
for an inspiring & educational talk
 on their research into Autism
and how the register will assist.

Rotary Club of Karrinyup

THE Karrinyup Community Men’s Shed is set to open
after a two-year search for a home.
The Rotary Club of Karrinyup has been trying
to establish a shed since late 2015
and steering committee member Peter Polain
said they were about to give up when the City of Stirling
identified a suitable property at the former
Balcatta Kindergarten site on Jedda Road.
“While this property is not as large as we hoped,
it is in a condition that will enable us to commence
operating very quickly,” he said.

Council approved a 12-month lease to the club
as a trial and Mr Polain hoped to show the shed was needed,
 especially as the closest group,
 Stirling Community Men’s Shed,
had a wait list for new members.

Under a benefactors trust and in conjunction with the North Beach RSL Sub-branch,
RC Karrinyup will sponsor two young Australians
 to participate in an organised
commemorative tour of the Kokoda trek in June.
The applicants were required to demonstrate a genuine interest
 in Australia’s military history.
At our meeting this week, David Singer and Drew Sweet
introduced themselves and told us why
they will embrace this gruelling undertaking
and why it holds a special significance for each of them.

Heather and Peter

Many people, and particularly Rotary Clubs
throughout Western Australia, are familiar with
RC Karrinyup's major 40th anniversay project, the Earbus,
which was designed to work in the Kimberley region of our state.
The purpose built vehicle was completed
and handed over to the Earbus Foundation in April of 2017
and has been hard at work in the Goldfields
 and other areas ever since.
Under the WA Country Health Service,
the State Government has committed to providing
$2.7 million over three years to expand the Earbus program.
A key election commitment, the Earbus program,
to be delivered by the Ear Foundation WA (EFWA),
offers mobile ear health clinics to Aboriginal children
in schools, day-cares, kindergartens and playgroups
and works with local primary healthcare services
to connect the community with general practitioners
, audiologists and ear, nose and throat (ENT) specialists
without duplication.
The Earbus program is now ready
for expansion in the Kimberley, and will be acknowledged
with an official launch to be held on Friday 18 May 2018.
Ms Josie Farrer MLA, Member for Kimberley,
will be representing the Deputy Premier for the launch.

For RC Karrinyup the Earbus has finally 'come home'
to work in the land for which it was intended.
